Austrian students protest against fees and access restrictions

For more than a week, Austrian students have occupied several universities and gathered in thousands to protest against tuition fees and limitations on access, and to fight for better public funding for higher education.

“The development at the Austrian universities has reached the point where the students are no more willing to accept the situation”, says Sigrid Maurer, chairperson of the Austrian national union of students (ÖH).

On Wednesday, more than 40 000 students protested outside the University of Vienna.  The University of Graz has also been occupied. Students are continuously debating both policy and the structure of the protest movement.

See the protest page unsereuni.at for more information, or read other updates on various Facebook sites.
