Spanish Student Representatives to promote a new Universities Act

On 26 September 2018, CREUP’s Executive Committee (Coordinator of Student Representatives of Spanish Public Universities) attended the Spanish Parliament to present a new Universities Act project, driven by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities and the Conference Board of Trustees.

During the event, the agents involved in higher education read a manifesto asking the Spanish Government to place the University as a strategic priority of its actions and to promote a new Universities Act. The communique, which insists on the need for student participation in the process, has been negotiated in the basis of consensus of political and social agents, especially by university rectors, and, more importantly, student representatives.

The main goal of this project is to achieve a great State Pact to rebuild the Spanish university through the experience of those who compose it. Among the objectives of the University Act are raising awareness of the importance of higher education, promoting a structural reform of the university governance model, increasing funding in higher education, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and improving the internationalisation of the Spanish universities.

From CREUP, we believe that, if the students’ voice is taken into account, this new law is going to make a difference regarding the previous ones. We hope that this kind of attitude of involvement of all civil society organisations related to higher education will be repeated in the future, and that the framework created by the incoming law allows us to build an inclusive university for everyone.
