“Privatisation of education needs an immediate response”

BUENOS AIRES – “Privatisation of higher education needs an immediate response.” This is one of the main outcomes from the ‘8th Higher Education and Research Conference’ of Education International, a representative organisation of teachers unions from across the globe. The event took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 25 to 27 September.

ESU Vice-Chairperson, Taina Moisander, attended the event which gathered people from all over the world, including Mongolia, the Philippine and South Africa. She said: “The conference took off with discussions on the current challenges that higher education is facing in Latin America and globally. We also focused on the impacts of austerity measures and rights of trade unions and students.” Rankings and assessment, diversity and equality and emerging research policy and international cooperation were as well explored at the conference.

The main outcome of the event was that the privatisation and commercialisation of education needs immediate responses. Moisander continued: “There is a need to join forces on the fight for public education which is a right for everyone. The cases of Chile and Colombia give us an example of what the repurcussions are when education is privatised.” On the other hand, she concluded, there have been success stories in Latin America, with Argentina and Venezuela having invested heavily into higher educaiton.
