ESU reiterates the need for increased protection of schools and universities during armed conflict, in line with the Resolution passed at the Board Meeting 67 in Baku.
The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) is organising a conference together with the Norwegian Government to take place in in Oslo, between 28 and 29 May 2015. During this event a large number of States across the globe are expected to sign the Safe Schools Declaration, which pledges to adopt the “The Guidelines for Protecting Schools and Universities from Military Use during Armed Conflict”

In advance of the conference, the coalition published a study revealing that in most of conflicts around the world: “schools and universities are converted into barracks, logistics bases, operational headquarters, weapons and ammunition caches, detention and interrogation centres, firing and observation positions, and recruitment grounds.”

“We urge all states to join the Safe Schools Declaration because this is a global problem in need of a global response.”said coalition director Diya Nijhowne.
