BM70: Autonomy and Independence of the student movement in Slovenia is under attack
ESU Resolution BM70 – Autonomy and Independence of the student movement in Slovenia is under attack
In April 2016, one of the Slovenian parliamentary parties has proposed changes to the law on Student Community without any previous notice or consultation with the representatives of students in Slovenia. ESU and its’ member unions believe that changes to the basic law that deals with the framework of the student movement in Slovenia without any consultation with the students is unacceptable and calls upon the decision-makers in Slovenia to ensure that the opinion of the legal and legitimate student representatives in Slovenia will be taken into account.
Furthermore, ESU and its’ member unions support the autonomy and independence of the Slovenian Student Union and its member organisations, and believe that it is of utmost importance that the student unions are independent from the political pressures from the outside and that the government or the parliament cannot and should not interfere with the policies of an autonomous student unions, which could be the effect of the proposed changes.
The European Students’ Union and its’ member organisations stand together with the Slovenian Student Union and Slovenian students in their efforts to stop these potentially very harmful changes and call upon the Government and the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia to ensure that the autonomy and independence of the student movement is respected in full.
