BM 61 – Support for CREUP-AGAINST HIGH TUITION FEES
Title: Support for CREUP-AGAINST HIGH TUITION FEES
Point of the agenda: 8c
Proposed by: CREUP

In the context of public funding of HEI’s, the Spanish National and Regional government agreed to increase the tuition fees within a 3’5-7’6%. By raising this rate from 3,5% to 7’6% , the government chose to inflict the crisis on Spanish students .
By this motion, the ESU wants to support Spanish students in their will to see this tuition fee frozen for next year as we strongly oppose this increase. The Spanish Government also chose to stop supporting students that are not able to pass examinations by their second sitting, and therefore the students will have to pay a 100% of the estimated cost of the subject. Such a measure will lead to a significant increase of tuition fees for average students and even more for applied science students that generally require more time to conclude their studies. These measures are not fair and will have a negative impact especially on students coming from a low social background. We are currently experiencing a difficult economic and social situation, therefore we believe that the government should avoid reducing the budget for HEI’s that are directly affecting students. Students with a low economic and social background will not be able to support living costs and high tuition fees and they will need to start working which will lead to a deterioration of their conditions, “forcing” them to end their studies later and spend more and more money on their education.
