Estonian students sent an educational book to President Putin.

TALLINN – On Sunday 16 March 2014, a support concert for Ukraine´s sovereignty was held in Tallinn, Estonia. Several NGOs, musicians, and youth organizations had come together to show their support towards Ukrainian people. The Federation of Estonian Students Union was also present at the event, who along with the youth organization Open Republic, issued a statement to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and condemned the Russian occupation in Crimea.

After the concert students sent their statement together with Karl Popper’s book “The Open Society and its Enemies” to President Vladimir Putin.

Chairman of the Estonian Students Union Sigrid Västra said that sending this book to President Putin was a symbolic action to emphasize that such illegal power demonstrations can never be the solution to any problem.

“We sincerely hope that this book will actually reach out to the Russian president. Looking at the current behaviour of the Russian leaders, it can be assumed, that they could really learn something from this book,” said Västra.

Karl Popper’s socio-philosophical writing “The Open Society and Its Enemies,” emphasizes the importance of people’s own decisions and actions towards improving and enhancing the society. The author criticizes closed societies and their management. As an ideal, Popper only accepts an open society, which acknowledges critical debate and human rights.
