The Baltic States’ Statement on Sexual Harassment and Psychological Violence in Higher Education Institutions

From 20th to 22nd of August Baltic organizational meeting (BOM) took place in Klaipėda, Lithuania. This year’s topic was mental health and sexual harassment in higher education institutions.

As the issue of mental health, sexual harassment and psychological violence have become more publicly discussed in the Baltic states lately, it has become increasingly important to discuss the matter publicly and give more attention to it.

During the first day of BOM, student representatives discussed how they combat challenges related to mental health and sexual harassment as well as exchanged views about the most successful ways of dealing with these challenges in working groups. During the second day, seminars with sociologists took place where student representatives learned about researching public opinion and survey creation. On the last day of BOM Statement on sexual harassment and psychological violence in the higher education institutions was adopted.

BOM is a regional cooperation agreement between national unions of students in the Baltic states: Federation of Estonian Student Unions (Eesti Üliõpilaskondade Liit), Student Union of Latvia (Latvijas Studentu apvienība) and Lithuanian National Union of Students (Lietuvos studentų sąjunga). It aims to promote closer cooperation between student organizations both on the national and local level and to ensure the exchange of knowledge concerning political, economic, social and educational processes in the Baltic countries.
