European Students’ Union calls for global truce on Peace Day

LONDON – The European Students’ Union (ESU) will take action on Peace Day 2012 and is calling for a Global Truce on 21 September. All 47 member unions of ESU will participate, online or in real live, to make Peace Day 2012 a success. ESU delegates will join Elton John on stage at the Peace One Day concert at the Wembley Stadium in London, together with other regional student platforms.

The Global Truce Day is an initiative from Peace One Day, an NGO led by Jeremy Gilley who ignited the establishment of the annual Peace Day on 21 September. ESU hopes that Peace Day 2012, which can be followed live on YouTube, will mark the largest reduction in global violence in recorded history, both domestically and internationally. Aim is to create the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace.

ESU Chair, Karina Ufert said: Education has the potential to address issues related to inequality, prejudices and societal injustices, contributing to raising awareness among young people and spreading knowledge on the importance of advocating for social justice and peace.“

On 27 February 2012, Jude Law together with the European Students’ Union (ESU), launched the Global Truce Day student campaign, in London.

Ufert concluded: “We believe in student organisations standing in solidarity at all levels. Showing our support for students worldwide is needed for all groups and individuals, in all cases of repression and violation of human rights. ESU especially calls for respect for academic freedom and student rights as pillars of a democratic society.”

Together with NUS-UK, ESU organised the Global Student Leadership Summit from 18 to 20 September, in London. During this event, access to quality education, sustainability and peace were highlighted.
