ESC36: Students met in Vienna under the subject Higher Education as a ‘Public good, Public responsibility’

Between 23 and 26 September 2018, almost a hundred student representatives from all across Europe gathered in Vienna to attend the 36th European Students’ Convention organised by the Austrian Students´ Union (ÖH) and the European Students Union (ESU).

The main theme of the ESC36 was Higher Education as a ‘Public Good, Public Responsibility’, and focused on the importance of HE as a precious tool for the personal development of students but also as them taking responsibility in leading the change for the further development of Europe; taking a critical perspective and combating unfair situations, intolerance and populist movements.

During the convention, student representatives had the opportunity to participate in many different workshops and discussions and tackle key subjects for the student movement: Bologna Process and Bologna Follow-Up Group (BFUG) developments, the European Parliament elections, Gender mainstreaming and Social Dimension among others.

As one of the main activities, a Panel Discussion was organised, which tried to answer the question ‘Between fighting for students’ rights and providing services: What are students’ representations responsible for?’ Through the discussion, the role of student representatives was thoroughly discussed and the student’s influence on political developments was highlighted.
