Belarusian Students’ Association (BSA) denounces politically motivated apointment of rectors

Belarusian Students’ Association (BSA) denounces president’s Alexander Lukashenko politically motivated apointment of rectors. The president allegedly told the newly apointed rectors that “Once they leaft the room, they will be people of the president. They will have to enforce Lukashenko’s policy. Otherwise, they shouldn’t have accepted these appointments”.

In October 2017, the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has appointed Andrey Korol as rector of Belarus State University (BSU); Sergey Haritonchyk as rector of Belarus National Technical University (BNTU); Denis Duk as rector of Mogilev State University (MSU) of A.A. Kuleshov and Maksim Kirkor, rector of Mogilev State University of Food Technologies (MSUoFT).

On the 7th of September, Belarus State University (BSU) joined Magna Charta Universitatum, whose first principle claims, that “The university is an automonus institution”, whose “research and teaching must be morally and intellectually independent of all political authority and economic power”.
