It has come to the attention of the European Students’ Union (ESU) that the Danish government is currently discussing austerity measures with regards to the Danish student grant system “Statens Uddannelsesstøtte” (SU). ESU recognizes that such measures would have serious consequences for Danish students, and therefore strongly opposes this.

The SU system helps every Danish student cover their most basic needs, thus enabling them to dedicate their time and energy towards their studies. The SU system contributes to the overcoming of economic barriers, thereby making it possible for everyone in Denmark to participate in higher education regardless of their socio-economic background. ESU recognizes that the SU system is one of the main contributors to social mobility in Denmark, and therefore should be protected and preserved in its current form.

ESU encourages Danish politicians to acknowledge the great benefits the SU system creates in Danish society, and work to preserve it rather than introducing austerity measures.
