Meginfelag Føroyskra Studenta (MFS; the Faroese National Union of Students) is the umbrella organization of students studying in the Faroe Islands and Faroese students studying abroad. We currently work closely together with three member unions and represent around 2000 students.

MFS was established in 1962 with the primary aim of representing all students under one organisation. The aims and the objectives from 1964 furthermore state a strong will to fight all kinds of inequality, work to establish a Faroese University, that access to education should be equal for all people, to establish strong international connections, etc. Some of these aims have been fulfilled, for example the establishment of the University of the Faroe Islands founded in 1965, but the fight against inequality amongst other things is still ongoing.

International cooperation has since the beginning been a high priority. Being a small union has its disadvantages, but we feel that being part of an international community gives us the opportunity to learn and follow the international tendencies and trends not only when it comes to educational politics but also how we ensure the students’ rights in regards of healthcare, the responsibility of the Higher Education System in regards to Sustainability etc. MFS strongly believes that being a part of an international community is essential to our union’s existence.

MFS has an Executive Council (EC) in which up to 11 can be elected. The EC is elected at the General Assembly (GA) and the specific positions are decided upon internally on the next meeting after the GA – the positions are: President, Vice President, Council Secretary, Financial Officer, International Officer, Communications- and Marketing Officer and up to five additional board members.
