Improving the experience of Ukrainian students

In the first days of April, 120 students and 33 academic staff from Ukraine gathered in Kiev to discuss how to set up student societies and implement student led activities using the results of IMPRESS – a  project co-funded by TEMPUS Programme.

The role of student unions, student representatives and the support and policy work of ESU has been presented by Blazhe Todorovski, ESU Vice-Chairperson. ESU’s work on student-centred learning (SCL) appeared to be of particular interest for Ukrainian higher education institutions (HEIs) and Erasmus+ National Agency.

IMPRESS is a student-oriented project, focused on improving the experience of Ukrainian students. This is why the involvement of students through their representatives in the partner universities and UASS has been key for the overall success of the project.

ESU focused on the importance of student self-governance as this issue is directly linked to improving the capacity of the students representatives and thus the capacity of UASS (ESU full member).

Our aim was to inspire the students, motivate and engage them to act as change agents (make an impact)- become partners to their higher education institutions (academic and non-academic staff) and to the Ministry of Education (through their national union UASS) in order to improve the quality of the HE in Ukraine.

During the last three years, we have:

  • analysed the results of the survey conducted by UASS and looked at what students want and need;
  • shared information and resources (knowledge, own experience, publications, results) from other EU projects, such as QUEST, SAGE, T4SCL, PASCL;
  • designed and delivered a capacity building activity: QA training for Ukrainian students representatives, involving ESU’s Quality Assurance Expert Pool;
  • hosted a partners meeting at our premises in Brussels.

Recently, ESU membership coordinator has met the Ukrainian and Northumbria University students in Newcastle and took the opportunity to discuss subjects like student representativeness; the role of the student unions and societies and how UASS and ESU can provide support.

ESU took active part in preparing the final dissemination event and students discussions in focus groups so that the road map for Ukrainian universities takes into account students’ view! The final dissemination event of IMPRESS project gave the floor to UASS and Northumbria University Student Union to present their activities as well.
