ESU statement on attacks in Norway

On behalf of the European Students’ Union and all of our member organisations we express our sorrow and offer deepest condolences to the people of Norway in these difficult times. Our hearts and minds are with the victims and their loved ones.

The attack on Arbeidernes Ungodomsfylking (AUF) camp is an attack on all of us and our values and beliefs on which united Europe is built upon. The European student movement carries a long history of fighting for a tolerant and open society, where respect of human rights and social justice are the core principles being protected and promoted.

Therefore, these days we are in sympathy with our counterparts who gathered in peace in Utøya in aspiration towards building a better world to live for all. But sadly, they were confronted with an act of unjustifiable violence.

European Students’ Union strongly condemns this act of terror against innocent people and we reaffirm our belief that we share with the Norwegian people that answer to violence is more openness and more democracy.
