Belarusian Students’ Association Report: The State of Belarusian Academia in 2022

The 2022 report by the Belarusian Students’ Association details the political repression faced by Belarusian academia in 2022, encompassing students and employees subjected to persecution for dissenting views and for opposing Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. It outlines various negative consequences, including arrests, expulsions, and politically motivated dismissals. The document also highlights instances of state-endorsed propaganda within educational institutions and the international community’s reaction, which includes both supportive measures like scholarships and negative impacts such as visa restrictions and the suspension of cooperation with Belarusian institutions. Finally, the report identifies problems with existing scholarship programmes for repressed students and offers several recommendations for international actors to improve support and address ongoing discrimination.
