Resolution on protecting the rights of Hungarian minorities in Europe
In recent months, alarming incidents have taken place in Slovakia and Romania, where young ethnic Hungarian people were verbally and physically attacked simply for speaking in their native language. These events are not isolated cases, but part of a broader, deeply concerning pattern in which people continue to face discrimination based on their linguistic, ethnic, or cultural identity. Such acts not only violate fundamental human rights but also threaten the core values of a democratic society.
The European Students’ Union stands in solidarity with all students who have been subjected to any form of discrimination or violence and strongly condemns all expressions and actions that treat linguistic, ethnic, or cultural diversity as a threat rather than a value.
We firmly believe that linguistic and cultural diversity is not a weakness but one of Europe’s greatest strengths. The ability to speak and live freely in one’s own language, express cultural identity without fear, and be part of an inclusive educational environment should be guaranteed for every student across the continent.
Discrimination has no place in our societies, neither in classrooms, nor in dormitories, nor on the streets. It is our collective responsibility to build inclusive environments across Europe, spaces where all students feel safe, respected, and empowered, regardless of their background. Tolerance, mutual understanding and solidarity must guide our communities if we are to ensure real equality in our societies.
