EU High-level event on the European Universities initiative
At the EU high-level meeting “Shaping the Future: European Universities Alliances for a Competitive Europe” on February 27th, ESU, as a panelist, emphasized the necessity of an inclusivity framework for the Alliances. Ensuring diversity is essential for fostering quality research and innovation, starting with a diverse student body with learners from all background being able to access the opportunities provided by the Alliances. This inclusivity is crucial for future-proofing education to support strategic goals such as competitiveness and preparedness. Additionally, ESU underscored the need for the EU to allocate adequate resources to education, as over 50% of Europe’s skill gaps stem from a shortage of high-level competencies which are typically developed through higher education. Finally, we stressed that education should not be solely subordinated to employment policy within a commodified European approach to higher education. Beyond its labour market function, education plays a vital role in personal self-development, critical thinking, civic education, and fostering transnational European understanding.
