Creation of a Toolbox for Student Union Development

At the moment the European Students’ Union (ESU) is a gathering of 49 national union of student from 38 countries and through its members represents over 11 million of students. ESU is also open structurally to other European student organization which cooperates with ESU as associate members. The level of development of student unions varies widely, from well-developed, well-financed, state recognized ones to countries where student unions are recently created, or even considered semi-legal organizations.

The Student Union Development Committee is on the way to develop and offer a toolbox in the form of a Student Union Development Handbook to support student union development across Europe. The concept of a toolbox allows all unions, whether at regional or national level to find a number of helpful advices or best practice examples on many different issues which can then be adapted to their national or local scenarios.

The Student Union Development Handbook will be a  publication including not only  content articles but also information on ESU’s member organizations. Possible topics for the publication are developing student union structures, policies or campaigns, networking with partners, building knowledge in the area of gender equality, student rights, project financing, public relations, how to be able to effectively and constructively engage in debates on Higher Education and much more.

The topics of the content articles for the first edition of the Student Union Development Handbook have already been send out to ESU’s board for comments and additional proposals together with a call for authors. Anyone who has knowledge and expertise in one of the targeted areas and is interested in contributing one of the articles can contact the Student Union Development Committee for more information ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Furthermore we would like to remind all NUSes which have not yet send in the filled-in membership questionnaire to do so as soon as possible since this information will also be a vital part of the handbook.
